At Liza Bakes, we create delicious cakes, puddings, tarts and scones. We make premium, award winning, authentic, artisan products using natural and, where possible, locally sourced ingredients. We also cater for customers with Gluten, Nut or Egg intolerances as well as Vegetarian or Vegan preferences…so everyone can enjoy Liza Bakes Cakes!
Our customers range from Farm Shops to High Street Stores and Coffee Shops to Pubs and Restaurants. We sell our produce either wrapped for re-sale or unwrapped for slicing, and every one is prepared with care and expertise by our team of skilled bakers.
We work closely with our sister company, Harriet’s Couture Cakes, under the expert ownership of Phyllis Bown. Phyllis in her own words has “…baked prepared and cooked healthy foods since I was able to climb on a chair to help my Grandmother make and bake her favourite dishes.”
Phyllis developed her love of baking from a simple start at the age of 10 when she made her first “Fruit Celebration Cake”, covered in Marzipan and Royal Icing, for her Grandfather’s birthday. This simple start, inspired by her Grandmothers and Father, fired a passion in Phyllis for baking and, from then on, she baked and cooked weekly for her family.
Phyllis started Harriets Cakes ltd, the sandwich shop, in April 2014. Harriet’s cakes sold a range of baked goods, sandwiches, snacks, cakes, puddings, scones and tarts to the public. This was massively successful and, shortly after, Harriets Couture Cakes ltd was born in 2016 to enable Phyllis to specialise in premium celebration cakes. Phyllis then bought Liza Bakes, an established award winning bakery, in Dec 2016 to grow her Business to Business opportunities!
Phyllis’s admiration for her grandmother Harriet and her skill, courage and entrepreneurial spirit were the inspiration behind Harriet’s Couture Cakes. Harriet, with four children to take care of, worked tirelessly to make ends meet. In the winter she would sell wet fish from her bicycle basket, and in the summer she loaded her bicycle basket with Ice Cream to sell to the local villagers. She went on to run the local fish and chip shop and then the local general store for many years.
Harriet was an excellent baker and taught Phyllis many baking skills, including bread making, pastry dishes, cakes and homemade wine! Coupled with delicious traditional recipes she learned from her other grandmother, Eileen, and skills learned from her father, a Chef with his own restaurant, Phyllis not only had the passion but the skills, recipes and inspiration to start baking professionally.
Both Liza Bakes and Harriet’s Couture Cakes use recipes handed down through generations of Phyllis’s family and, of course, recipes created by Phyllis herself! You only have to look at our growing list of awards to see how delicious our products are!
